Ophthalmic Technology trains you to assist eye specialists in diagnosing, treating, and managing eye conditions. You’ll learn to perform eye tests, handle instruments, assist in minor procedures, and manage eye-care equipment. These courses are accredited by TVET-CDACC and designed to give you practical, job-ready skills.

Duration & mode

Level 6 — 18–24 months with advanced theory, leadership/management units, and extended clinical placements.
Modes: Full-time, sometimes part-time or modular intake depending on the college.

What you will learn

The TVET CDACC curricula are competency-based and grouped into Basic, Common and Core competencies. Below are representative modules you’ll find in each level (modules and unit titles vary slightly between institutions but follow TVET CDACC occupational standards).

Level 6

• Advanced refraction and contact lens fitting

• Ophthalmic diagnostic tests and interpretation

• Assistance in advanced surgical procedures (cataract, glaucoma, retinal procedures)

• Eye-care equipment management and sterilisation

• Leadership and supervision in eye care units

• Clinical research, ethics, and evidence-based practice

• Emergency response in ophthalmic care
