Perioperative Theatre Technology trains you to work in the operating theatre — preparing the patient, instruments and environment for surgery, assisting the surgical team, preventing infections, and looking after theatre equipment. These are hands-on courses accredited by TVET-CDACC and built around competency-based learning so you graduate ready to get to work.

Duration & mode

Level 5 — typically 12 months (full-time) with classroom, skills labs and clinical attachments. Main

Level 6 — typically 18–24 months (depending on college and module load) with more advanced theory, leadership/management units and longer clinical attachment. TVET CDACC
Modes: Full-time, sometimes part-time or modular intake depending on the training institution.

What you will learn

The TVET CDACC curricula are competency-based and grouped into Basic, Common and Core competencies. Below are representative modules you’ll find in each level (modules and unit titles vary slightly between institutions but follow TVET CDACC occupational standards).

• Advanced perioperative theatre safety & quality assurance

• Advanced instrument handling and sterilisation management

• Anaesthesia assistance fundamentals and monitoring basics

• Advanced surgical assistance for specialised procedures

• Theatre management, leadership and resource planning

• Clinical supervision and mentoring (for junior staff)

• Research methods, ethics and evidence-based practice

• Emergency theatre response and advanced patient safety systems

Level 5

• Perioperative theatre safety & infection prevention

• Aseptic technique and instrument handling

• Preparing and maintaining the theatre environment (setups)

• Assisting in theatre procedures (basic surgical assistance)

• Care and maintenance of theatre instruments and equipment

• Basic patient preparation and positioning

• Communication and teamwork in theatre

• Basic record keeping and theatre administration
